  • Susie Cumberland is a Research Analyst for the Manufacturing Technology group at IHS Markit. Responsible for IHS Markit’s coverage on Industrial Communications, Discrete-Machine Safety Components, and Low-Voltage Switchgear. Susie holds a BSc (Hons) in Physics with Astrophysics from Nottingham Trent University, England.     Title: “The Evolution of Technology”

    Synopsis: The evolution in technology from dumb devices and centralised intelligence to embedded and decentralised intelligence is leading to Industry 4.0/IoT based applications. A key enabler to this is occurring through developments in connectivity, facilitating a connected enterprises and automated data collection. Thus, revolutionising the factory floor. This presentation will introduce the industrial communications trends and provide some quantitive analysis to connectivity, and enabling IoT. Some of the key points addressed include: • How are devices connected today? • How are companies transitioning from traditional networking (Fieldbus) to IP addressable technologies (Ethernet and Wireless)? • What impact will OPC UA and TSN have on the factory of the future
